Blackwell also created a medical college for women in New York City.

2. Florence Nightingale

Commonly referred to as “the lady with the lamp,” Florence Nightingale treated wounded soldiers during the Crimean War in the 1850s. She spent time working at a military hospital and helped improve sanitary conditions. Her work resulted in a decrease in mortality rates from 40% to 2%.

Nightingale exposed poor sanitary conditions in healthcare. Furthermore, her work led to improvements in the standard of care for healthcare facilities around the world.

3. Clara Barton

Clara Barton was a nurse who treated soldiers during the Civil War. She also opened the Office of Missing Soldiers to help connect more than 20,000 soldiers with their families.

In 1869, Barton traveled to Switzerland, where she learned about a movement to provide aid to those injured by combat. She volunteered with the International Committee of the Red Cross during the Franco-Prussian War. And on May 21, 1881, Barton founded the American Red Cross.
